The College of the Arts and the Fletcher Hall Gallery presents One Work, One Text, a group exhibition from the Department of Visual Arts Faculty at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. The exhibition investigates intertextual relationships, which, as a subject, includes both links and also possible disconnections between a single artwork or image and other words / texts / orders.

In an open-ended way, this exhibition explores, especially, the interplay between works of visual art and language and the printed or written word.  Each faculty member in the exhibition has selected a single work of art they’ve made to exhibit along with a textual complement. The image may pose a relationship to another instance of text—a personal letter, a famous speech, a poem, a study for that work, or even another work of art or mix of different orders. The ‘text’ stands as something of the artist’s choosing: a poem cited in or relevant to the artwork on view; an extract from a thinker relevant to issues at stake; a portion of an interview; or perhaps even a typographical improvisation relevant to the work itself. The exhibition was conceived and curated by Christopher Bennett, Assistant Professor of Art History, at UL Lafayette and Michael Eble, Curator of Exhibitions and Events, for the College of the Arts at UL Lafayette.

Additionally, the exhibition showcases the important creative research produced by the faculty within the Department of Visual Arts. The Department of Visual Arts at the University of Louisiana of Lafayette offers a concentration in traditional areas of art leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Fields of study include animation and computer arts, ceramics, graphic design, media arts, metal work and jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The department also offers an art education program affiliated with the college of Education, along with a strong foundations initiative and comprehensive instruction in art history.
